Detective Oakwood spent the morning in his room, examining the contents of several large envelopes that arrived by messenger the day before. He sat at the little desk, a dressing table originally, surrounded by ornate carved mahogany furniture, a fan aimed directly at his face. He had heard the whispering from the artists quartered in their quaint but stuffy bungalows about secret air-conditioners cooling the main house, but it was certainly not true in his room. The heat gathered in the heavy curtains each day and settled there, immovable, for the nights.
The detective leaned toward the open window, but the air was no fresher outside. Why, he wondered, had Gene Gill been in Canada the day before he was murdered? G
