* U.S.-based EyeMarker Systems demonstrated what it called the world's first hand-held device for testing exposure to nerve agents. By scanning the eye, it can also detect carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning, or identify trauma to the brain. CEO Wes McGee said the product would have a big impact on the way emergency services carry out triage, the process of sorting out casualties according to priority.

* British-based Auxetix has developed high-strength fibers that get fatter when stretched and are highly resistant to blast damage. Applications include special curtains to catch flying window glass in an explosion, for which the company sees a $420 million market in Manhattan's financial district alone, and up to $10 billion worldwide.

* Singapore-based XID Technologies uses a patented 'face synthesis' device to create up to thousands of images from a single photo, predicting how the subject will look in different lighting conditions, from different angles and with varying expressions or facial hair. It successfully deployed the system in security cameras controlling access to a site with thousands of workers, using it to recognize authorized staff and detect intruders.

NIGHT CAMERA

The winning entry was from NoblePeak Vision Corporation, based in Wakefield, Massachusetts and founded in 2002 as a spin-off from Bell Laboratories: its night-vision camera can pick up short-wave infrared (SWIR) light invisible to the eye.

The black-and-white night-time images are much sharper than those generated by thermal video cameras, and applications include battlefield vision, protecting buildings and helping car drivers avoid collisions at night.

Other finalists included biometric technology to recognize keyboard users by their typing behavior -- sparing users from memorizing dozens of passwords -- and a hand-held device for testing exposure to nerve agents.

By scanning the eye, it can also detect carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning, or identify trauma to the brain.

Another company offered new high-strength fibers that get fatter when stretched and are highly resistant to blast damage, offering potential as special curtains to catch flying window glass in an explosion.

Also in contention was a 'face synthesis' device to create up to thousands of images from one photo, predicting how the subject will look in different lighting conditions, from different angles and with varying expressions or facial hair.

teering for a win
NEW DELHI, PTI: Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly relied on their vast experience to put India on the threshold of a memorable victory against arch rivals Pakistan with the hosts needing just 32 runs on the final day to clinch the first Test.

Chasing a modest target of 203, the Indians were in a spot of bother at 93 for three before Ganguly (48) and Tendulkar (32) came to the rescue of the team with an unbeaten 78-run stand to inch closer to a win which would give them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India ended an action-packed fourth day at 171 for three in 54.5 overs when bad light dropped early curtains on proceeding.

Earlier, spurred on by a near capacity holiday crowd, the home team took little over 17 overs to polish off the remaining five wickets to bundle out Pakistan for 247, leaving them with a moderate target.

Ganguly's 61-ball knock included eight hits to the fence, while Tendulkar hit five fours during his 86-ball unbeaten stay. (AFP Photo)

They were able to postpone their purchase until the windows went on sale, Burk said, and were able to pay for the four windows that they needed by adding $60 of their own money.

Embrace Iowa was launched in 1984 by The Des Moines Register as the Ethiopian relief program known as Iowa Shares and Iowa Cares, and has since helped thousands of the state's needy residents.

Last year, donations totaled $170,000, helping 521 families make payments on rent, utility bills, appliances, car repairs and more.

The rising costs of fuel and food are putting an even greater strain on families this year, said Lana Ross, executive director of the Iowa Community Action Association, which administers the funds.

'As our country increases its commitment to using ethanol, it's having a major impact on food cost, which is affecting low income families' ability to meet their nutritional needs,' Ross said. 'I think the other piece of this puzzle is we have so many families needing help with utilities because we just don't have enough support from the federal level from the LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) to meet the needs.'

The average payment from LIHEAP in 2001 was $565; last year, it was $317, Ross said. 'The federal appropriation for LIHEAP has not kept up with the increased fuel costs that families are experiencing.'

One of the strengths of Embrace Iowa is that it helps 'fill in the gaps' for families, Ross said.

This is the second time that the Burks have been helped by Embrace Iowa. In 1993, the program helped buy Burk a sewing machine, which she used to sew curtains and her children's clothes.

'You never know how a gift you give today could affect the person tomorrow or many tomorrows later,' Burk wrote. 'Thank you so much to the creators and sponsors of this program!'

To his surprise, people raved about it, so he distributed a Thanksgiving card last year showing his home during the 2006 fall season.
Schweitz resigned from his job to work on Seasonalife full-time.

Before the 1980 Winter Olympics was held in Lake Placid, Schweitz spent 18 months capturing more than 1,600 structures there for a map. He was contracted to work with ABC Sports and the map was given to Olympic gold medal winners.
Schweitz loves photographing residences whose exteriors show the care owners have for them. He remembers photographing a Federal-style home in Cazenovia, Madison County, when the owner asked what he was up to.
Before Schweitz could take another picture, she went inside to pull the window curtains together for the photo because she was 'house proud.'
That's the type of pride Schweitz hopes to capture with Seasonalife.

'I would just go out to do this for the smiles,' he says.

The blaze started in a first-floor front apartment and was believed to be accidental, said Deputy Fire Chief Scotty Williams. The cause of the blaze hasn't been determined and might not be, because of the extent of damage, he said.
Normally, Rodriguez, 56, of Spencerport, travels another route to Chili Avenue, but chose to take Kenwood Avenue on Saturday. 'I guess the Lord put me there,' he said.
Rodriguez said at first it looked like a small fire on some curtains in a first-floor window. Seconds after he called his dispatcher to contact 911, flames were shooting from the window.
'That fire went from zero to 100 in five minutes. I couldn't believe it,' he said.

Hardy had arrived at that time. Rodriguez raced to the home, but heavy smoke blocked the front door. He then ran to a side door and kicked it in

The residences had to be evacuated, but fortunately the dormitory was already empty, he said.

Six firefighters were injured in the blaze, none seriously.

Among those battling the blaze are 55 firefighters from Ventura County, including crews from Ventura County Fire Department, and departments in Ventura, Santa Paula, Point Mugu, and Oxnard.

As part of their arsenal, firefighters used a DC-10 jumbo jet to attack the blaze from the air, dumping curtains of orange-pink retardant on the flames. Helicopters lowered hoses into pools and the nearby Pacific to refill their tanks for water-dropping runs, and SuperScooper amphibious airplanes skimmed the ocean to reload.

Hundreds of firefighters and equipment from throughout the state had been positioned in Southern California for most of the week because of the predicted Santa Ana winds, which had been expected to blow most of the week but didn't arrive until late Friday.

Santa Anas also fueled last month's Malibu fire. That blaze was part of siege of more than 15 Santa Ana-stoked wildfires that destroyed more than 2,000 homes, killed 14 people and blackened a total of 809 square miles between Los Angeles County and the U.S.-Mexico border

Rose Darden apologizes that her occasional-sale shop in Buffalo, Minn., is 'long on charm but short on authenticity.' Don't believe her. Darden's Second Hand Rose is every bit as charming as promised, but it's plenty authentic, too, in a wildly imaginative and recycled way. And, aren't those Mason jar rims and old house numbers hanging regally (wink-wink) from a Christmas tree? And who says silver trays can't be hung from a dining room wall?
Turns out that most of downtown Buffalo, nestled along pretty Buffalo Lake, is like that: One delightful surprise after another, whether you're shopping for unique gifts, seeking holiday decorating ideas or trying to escape the madding mall crowds with a tasty cup of joe for a buck. After an easy 50-minute drive from the Twin Cities, I parked my car once and spent the day strolling through vintage home furnishing and craft stores, an abundantly stocked basement yarn shop, and two great bookstores, one with a coffee shop.

Phthalates (pronounced 'THAL-ates') are the chemicals that make plastic flexible and allow creams and personal-care products to hold their smell. U.S. chemical companies produce more than 2 billion pounds of these compounds a year. They are commonly found in nail polishes and hair sprays, shower curtains and even Halloween costumes.

For more than a decade, government agencies have said that several of these chemicals are safe at levels that people are exposed to every day.

Chemical makers have relied on these assurances as proof that their products are safe. They bolster these conclusions with millions of dollars of research and testing.

But the newspaper's review of 258 studies of bisphenol A, a common ingredient in baby bottles, reusable water bottles, eyeglass lenses and DVDs, shows otherwise.

More than 80% of studies analyzed by the Journal Sentinel show that the chemical adversely affects animals, causing cancer and other diseases

Taha will be best remembered as the man who helped reshape Sarawak football.

In the 1970s, when it was in decline and the management went bankrupt, Taha stepped in.

He founded the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) in 1974, replacing the Sarawak Amateur Football Association, with assistance from the state government. He rewrote the constitution and overhauled the management.

After laying the groundwork, it was in the late 1980s and mid-1990s that Taha reaped the rewards of his hard work.

In the 1990s, then coached by Australian Alan Vest, Sarawak turned from being the whipping boy of Malaysian football into title contenders.

Other honours soon followed. In 1997, Sarawak was crowned Premier League champion and won the Charity Shield in the 1998 season curtain raiser.

In 1999, Sarawak reached the finals of the prestigious Malaysia Cup, its first ever, with Taha at the helm.

A lawyer by training, he obtained his Bachelor of Law from the University of Leeds in Britain.

He will be buried at the Semariang Muslim cemetery today

ONE AFTERNOON last year, at the height of Israel's month-long war in Lebanon, I was driving with my Lebanese translator through a neighbourhood that had just been hit by another Israeli air strike. All around us lay an eerie, apocalyptic landscape of rubble-strewn roads and ripped apartment buildings with their windows blown out, curtains billowing like distress flags on a storm-stricken ship.

'Can you smell it?' asked Mohammed Ajami, my translator, sniffing the humid air wafting through the open car window as we snaked our way through the bomb-blasted streets. 'It's that old-time Beirut war stench; cordite, smoke and garbage.'

This weekend, fears were growing that Beirut's old-time war stench might again be set to permeate the city as Lebanon plunged once more into political uncertainty and faced the possibility of civil strife

A couple of 2006 studies examined the survival ability of MRSA bacteria on various surfaces in hospitals.

One found that MRSA survived for 11 days on a plastic patient chart, more than 12 days on a laminated tabletop, and nine days on a cloth curtain.

The other study determined that MRSA and some other types of disease-causing microorganisms could survive for weeks or months on dry surfaces.

Low temperature (e.g., 39 to 43 degrees F.), high humidity, or greater concentrations of organisms appeared to boost survival time for most bacteria, viruses and fungi
