EW YORK -- Curtain up. Broadway raced to reopen for business Thursday after stagehands and theater producers reached a tentative agreement, ending a crippling strike that kept more than two dozen shows dark for 19 days.

The settlement came Wednesday night, the third day of marathon sessions between Local 1 and the League of American Theatres and Producers to end the lengthy work stoppage that has cost producers and the city millions of dollars.

Most plays and musicals that were shut during the walkout, which began Nov. 10, were expected to be up and running Thursday evening

NEW YORK - Broadway stagehands and theater producers reached a tentative agreement Wednesday night to end a strike and almost immediately return to the stage most of the 26 plays and musicals that have been shut down for more than two weeks.

The settlement came after two days of marathon, all-night sessions and months of negotiation between Local 1 and the League of American Theatres and Producers.

The walkout, which began Nov. 10, has cost the city and theaters millions of dollars in lost income.

Bruce Cohen, a spokesman for the union, which represents 3,000 electricians, carpenters, sound and lighting technicians, and scenery and prop handlers, confirmed the agreement to end the 19-day work stoppage

The first few patients began arriving at the First Choice clinic earlier this month, said manager Rachel Butler. She and Dr. Timothy Graves, the medical director, are working out of the front portion of the Walnut Street building that one day will house the dental practice.

She picked up Crystal, the youngest, and held my mother's hand. And the nine of us walked through this door into another world, full of dim lights in some areas and brilliance in others. There were only ten rooms, in a circle of sorts, around a big station where nurses and doctors were congregated. We could hear beeping noises and strange sounds I couldn't identify.
Mary quietly pulled back a curtain and said we could have all the time we needed. Time for what? She had brought us into the wrong room! I didn't know that person! I kept looking at Mom, waiting for her to tell Mary they'd gone to the wrong place. Clearly, Room 110 belonged to someone else, because I didn't recognize the man who laid in that bed, attached to so many wires and machines.
'Kids, you can stand near the bed, if you want,' Mary whispered in this calming voice. 'Don't be afraid to touch his hand

According to Sarah Noble '10, a student employee at Da Vinci's, the redecoration plans are striving towards creating 'a place where people can come in and study, hang out and listen to music. We want it to be comfortable.'
Recently, Noble and fellow co-workers Stephanie Hsu '08, Elizabeth Crow '09 and Sasha Grenier '08 have been meeting to coordinate and brainstorm ideas for redecorating Da Vinci's, including coming up with a budget needed for the changes to take place. The budget has been approved by Bruno.
Renovation plans consist of repainting the cafe, bringing in new furniture, including new table tops and more comfortable seating, curtains, a bookshelf to store used books and board games, new throw rugs, lamps and even updating the menu with pastries and baked goods that, according to Bruno, will make the cafe more 'bakery-driven.'
'We're also going to try to bring in some organic and whole foods to try to appeal to people looking for those types of foods,' Bruno said.
According to Bruno, it is difficult to compete with the meal plan that students use on campus, as it does not currently allow for students to use points at the cafe. Nevertheless, there are various amenities in place, including student discounts and free internet access. 'There [are] not good high-end baked goods on campus,' Bruno said, pointing out an additional potential draw

The Editor, Sir:
Some parents want much from their children without investing in their development. But how many of you buy a book for your child? How many of you sit down and read with your child? How many of you visit your children's school and check with the teachers to see the progress of your children?
Some of us believe that the teacher can work his/her super miracle to get that child to read and write well. But teachers, however well-trained, cannot manage a class of 45 students to see that all will read and write well.
Don't expect that a child spoilt at home wanting his/her way, that the teacher will now have the time to sit with students of different backgrounds to make sure that everyone can read.
Read with your child
The money that you plan to invest in fancy hair styles, outfits, shower curtains, carpet and pot sets should be used instead for your child's education.
Don't buy a book and give it as a present. Both of you should read it. Share in the experience that the book has to offer.
Take your children on field trips, take them shopping, let them choose what they will be having for dinner, let them be in charge for the day, encourage them to express their views and let them share their feelings

The two have created a haven of elevated sensibility compellingly contrasted by the gritty urban setting.

I shiver with pleasure every time I walk through the door into a small room lit by candles. I prefer to sit with my back to the large window covered with gauzy white curtains at a narrow, white linen-covered table, and a faux, horsehair banquette, so I can look at the tiny open kitchen and bar.

My eye rests on each detail: a heavily framed wood mirror; a battery of pots and pans dangling from a ceiling rack; stacks of old china; a bowl of garden roses; a plate of small red apples; slowly turning ceiling fans; beautiful ridged water tumblers. A large moody oil painting depicts the very place we are, under a concrete overpass where urban debris collects. I pull the curtain aside to get the hauntingly bleak, Hopper-esque view, illuminated by street lights

Post-Bulletin, Austin MN

Candles are to blame for a fire that broke out in an Austin home Monday.

At 11:48 a.m., police officers and the Austin Fire Department responded to the fire at 1406 Third Ave. S.W., where they saw smoke billowing out the front door.

According to Police Chief Paul Philipp, two candles on a window sill lit the curtains on fire, which the 87-year-old woman who lives at the home tried to put out with a rug.

The woman could be heard yelling inside the house, said Philipp. A short time later, the woman exited the home unharmed.

An estimate of damages was not available.

According to Philipp, candle-related fires have accounted for more than $1 million in damages in the Austin area in the past few years.

Producers and stagehands are 'very close' to signing a contract to end the 18-day Broadway strike Wednesday, sources told the Daily News.

If a deal is reached, the curtains could rise on more than two dozen shuttered shows by Thursday night.

'We're very close,' said a source involved in the talks.

The contract would last for five years, instead of the usual three.

Hall recalled volunteering at the Empty Stocking Fund as a child. 'For someone to rob the Empty Stocking Fund, it's just a travesty,' he said.

Rick Harris, the fund's program manager, said he discovered the burglary Saturday afternoon when he stopped by the warehouse to pick up some paperwork. Flapping curtains and strewn, open boxes gave the crime scene way.

'It's like stealing from church for me,' said Harris. 'It's just the thought of some kids having to do without because some people are being greedy.'

Crawford said vendors have promised to replace the stolen items or at least provide comparable substitutes, perhaps at a lower cost than the $22,000 already spent. The gifts, purchased at discount, have a retail value approaching $50,000

The Indiana Legislature earlier approved $1.6 million for the new play and to upgrade the 22-year-old, 1,500-seat covered Lincoln Amphitheatre at Lincoln State in Spencer County.

Our board has a lot of work to do between now and June 2009, said Will Koch, who heads the drama association.

Lincoln's character was forged right here in Southern Indiana, he said. We want the new play to leave the audience with the understanding that the boy who lived here from ages 7 to 21 became such a remarkable president in large part due to what he experienced and learned here.

The group's Web site (www.LincolnAmphitheatre.com) provides a vision of what it hopes to see incorporated into an inspirational production. That includes using modern electronic media, such as projection screens, projection on water curtains and fog curtains, and even pyrotechnics to more powerfully tell the story.

The play would center on Lincoln and his presidential years, with flashbacks to his Indiana youth and how it forged his character.

We expect historical accuracy, but understand appropriate use of artistic license, says the Web site

Have a professional inspect your roof for any damage that may cause water infiltration to occur when snow piles on.

Interior
Ensure your home interior is warm, dry and ready to remain so for the next few months.

Apply an extra layer of caulking/sealant around windows and doors to prevent drafts.

Remove screens from windows and doors (if necessary) and put storm windows in place. Similarly, remove black-out shades or curtains to allow sunlight to enter the home and keep it warmer naturally.

Inspect your attic and consider adding extra insulation. Not only will this keep your home warmer in the winter, itll prevent heat from penetrating in the summer, thus keeping the home cooler.

Have your fireplace and chimney serviced by a professional prior to seasonal use. Buildup of creosote can cause a flammable situation

Giving evidence by video link from Adelaide, where she now lives, M said Southall had repeatedly asked her how the older boy died and she demonstrated using a pencil and a shoelace. She told the panel that Southall looked at her and said 'very clever' in a sarcastic voice.

The boy was found hanging from a curtain rail. Southall said to her, she continued, sobbing: 'I put it to you that you killed your son by injecting him, hanging him up, leaving him there and then ringing an ambulance.'

During his six days of evidence, Southall said he was trying to protect the younger son and was concerned because the family had burned the curtain rail.

Southall said he was trying to investigate the death in a 'forensic manner' and insisted: 'I wanted to be correct.' He said he was also concerned about what he considered to be gaps in the police investigation and the following inquest - which returned an open verdict.

The GMC also found that Southall had wrongly removed documents relating to this case and that of another family, taking them from London's Royal Brompton hospital to the North Staffordshire Hospital NHS Trust when he changed jobs and adding them to a 'special file' of child abuse cases that he kept.

The GMC panel said that he 'damaged the integrity' of hospital medical records by his actions.

Western and eastern exposures get about 60 percent of the intensity of southern exposures. Northern exposures get only 20 percent of the light of southern exposures. Most of the light coming in north windows is indirect light. Other factors influencing light intensity besides season include the presence and type of curtains, cloud cover, shade from buildings or vegetation, the cleanliness of the window and the reflectiveness of the surroundings. Houseplant owners can compensate for low light intensity by increasing the time a plant is exposed to light. Increased hours of lighting allow the plant to make sufficient food to survive and grow

CAMDEN/ROCKPORT (Nov 27): Even if you don't typically follow economic news all that closely, the fact that oil prices are now hovering near the $100-per-barrel mark has probably caught your attention. If not, it should, because stratospheric oil prices will almost certainly affect you as a consumer - and it may also cause you to review your investment strategies.
Of course, if you drive, you're aware of oil economics every time you fill up at the pump. But even if you don't own a car, you'll find that oil - or at least petrochemical products made from crude oil - is leaving a big footprint in your life. From computers to clothing, pens to paint brushes and shampoo to shower curtains, you use petrochemical products made from petroleum all the time, and every day. So, given the stratospheric prices of crude oil, don't be surprised to see the prices of many of these products start to climb.
You might be less concerned about the potential inflationary pressures caused by rising oil prices if your income were rising significantly. But that may not be the case; over the past several years, wage growth has been relatively low. Factoring in inflation, weekly wages were just 2.2 percent higher in September 2007 than in March 2001, according to research compiled by the Center for American Progress.
So, here's the situation in a nutshell: While prices may be going up, your wages may be stagnating

12, says Dr. Wasmeier. There is always going to be inconvenience when you have older people in an area that is not devoted to older people, she said. But, when I first came here two years ago, we had people in corridors, in corridor beds, with a curtain around them, no TV, no bathroom, no privacy and no confidentiality. We have all this gone. People are actually in a four-bed ward. It s not the same issue we had here for years

FIRE DRAMA

13:44 - 27 November 2007

A house in Bath was almost destroyed after an student tried to stop a blaze by throwing lit curtains on to a conservatory. The small fire had originally started in a waste paper bin in an first floor bedroom in the Lyndhurst Road property. It was caused by a cigarette which had not been put out properly. The home in Oldfield Park was occupied by four students. One of them tried to dampen the small blaze out with an extinguisher and realised a minor fire had spread to the curtains in the bedroom.
The curtains were then thrown from the bedroom window and landed on the conservatory below. The heat melted the roof of the conservatory, which dripped down and set fire to the conversatory and spread to the kitchen and downstairs bathroom causing considerable damage. The upstairs bedroom was also damaged in the blaze.Fire officers were called to the scene by which time all four occupants were outside. They used three pumps and a turntable ladder to tackle the blaze. An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the incident highlighted two major safety issues.'Firstly if you are going to smoke in your home make sure you extinguish the cigarette properly.'And if you do come across a fire, close the door and get everyone out and call 999.'

Charlie's answer was typical: 'That's OK, doctor, I'm quite prepared to go.'

He never complained, biting back the pain he must have felt.

I eventually dropped off to sleep, but woke suddenly around midnight. The silence hit me - the ward bay was deadly quiet, no cries of pain.

Answering the call of nature, I got up and as I passed Charlie's bed, pulled his curtain aside and saw he had gone to meet his maker.

Men like Charlie, in the war, faced death daily on the seas infested with enemy U' boats whose objective was to send them to a watery grave.

Aurora screamed. In his rush to help Aurora, Icarus found himself holding Aurora close. Glancing down, he noticed she wore a necklace. A silvery cross. Icarus remembered Badenne hated Christian women - women like her mother.

'Get her away!' Icarus bellowed at Fesano over the ripping of what could only be curtains - it seemed as though Badenne was completely irate now.

Fesano nodded with a rookie's obedience. Picking up Aurora as though she were a suitcase, he ran out of the house. With a flicker of morbid amusement, Icarus could hear the ever-stubborn Aurora chastising Fesano for not knowing how to carry a lady properly.

As soon as the pair of them were out of the house, the ghostly temper tantrum came to an abrupt halt

Sister Needs Help To Deal With Hubby's Depression
Nov 27 2007 Joan Burnie

Q I'M not an interfering neighbour but I am worried about a family beside me.

They have four kids, two are at school, one at nursery and the wee one is home with her mum all day.

This is a friendly neighbourhood but these kids are never out playing.

The curtains are left closed all day and we never see them.

The parents don't talk to anyone either. Am I being a busybody or should I tell someone I don't think things are right in that house?

A MAYBE, given some of the horror stories we've had, there should be more busybodies.

But if there was anything wrong, hopefully the nursery or health visitor would have noticed

To the right of the Q-A team is the management offices with nice views of the downtown core and Boulevard de Maisonneuve.

Just beyond the management offices is the nitty gritty of the operations, the development area.

No development office is complete with a punching bag in the middle of the room, wait a punching bag? 1) It s a great stress reliever 2) It s better than an office dog that is much more distracting and doesn t chew on network cables.

Next to the breakroom is a full shower facility for those downtown core dwellers who bike to the office during the summer months. The lunch room is quite large with a great view of the downtown core for the next year; that is until a condo project next door comes up and they ll end up looking into someone s bedroom (buy curtains folks).

That pretty much sums up the press event, there was a great amount of delicious food and drink to satisfy the fairly large crowd attending the event. For those of you who happen upon this page seeking to apply for work for Eidos Montreal, they launched a website just for you http://www.eidosmontreal.com/

Slipcovers for couches can be sewn in a one piece design. Another option is a form fitting stretch slip cover that clings to furniture contours for a close, tight fit. Some designs come with decorative ties to hold the cover from moving. A semi-fitted, loosely constructed slip cover with a straight or elasticized skirt is yet another choice.

Slipcovers may be paired with throws, matching pillows and even window treatments for a room that is fully coordinated. Sometimes the curtains or pillows come ready made, sometimes you can purchase extra fabric to sew them yourself.

Order prewashed, preshrunk material that is easy to care for and machine washable. Stain repellent technology will keep couch slipcovers looking fabulous after many washings

Executives from the Dodgers and Red Sox joined local politicians and former players at a news conference, hosted by legendary broadcaster Vin Scully at the Coliseum on Monday to announce the event.
'It's going to be so much fun next March 29,' said Dodgers chairman Frank McCourt. 'There's already a great buzz about it. It's just a pleasure. I think Senator Mark Ridley Thomas had a great idea and we just jumped on the opportunity. It's going to be a special, special night here in LA, not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the team's arrival in LA, but the proceeds are going to go to ThinkCure, our new official charity.'
It's estimated that the Dodgers will spend around $250,000 to build temporary dugouts for the game as well as erect a longer and larger metal curtain in left field, dubbed the 'Chinese curtain' from 1958-61 when the Dodgers called the Coliseum home. The curtain was created to prevent pop flies from becoming home runs because the dimensions of the Coliseum made left field 251 feet away from home plate. New Dodgers manager Joe Torre remembers being enticed by the curtain when he played in the Coliseum in 1961 as a member of the Milwaukee Braves

So I slowly lifted up on my right elbow and turned my head and shoulders around to look over her side. She was obviously sleeping very soundly, as her breathing was slow and rhythmic, and her arms and hands tightly nestled close to her body. It didn't really look as if she could have moved her hand around that quickly without stirring more from her very comfortable position.

It was about 3 AM, and the room was softly lit with light filtering through the window curtains. Outside, a street lamp and soft moonlight supplied just enough light to see inside the room.

Suddenly, as if turned on by a light switch, a gently swirling, glowing, blue-grey cloud (about the size of a soccer ball) appeared about three feet over the bottom half of Mary's body. It immediately began to change shape, quickly flowing into the outline of the upper torso of a human body. As the shape formed, more organized and intense shades of grey formed the outlines, and the head and shoulders took on a more realistic appearance

vom Saal - BPA can alter cells by acting like the sex hormone estrogen, and it can do this a less than one part per trillion in blood - that is of real concern since humans have on average over one part per billion BPA in their blood. Until the EPA and FDA acknowledge that there are hundreds of peer reviewed publications that report this, there will be no regulatory action. Since the American Chemistry Council, the industry trade organizaiton, funds research that always concludes BPA is completely safe, they have managed to block the FDA and EPA from any action based on 'uncertainty' due to conflicting science. I like to change the shower curtains fairly regularly in my shower and now my boyfriend is having problems sexually. Could these in any way be related?

witzerland says goodbye to ballet legend Bejart
12 minutes ago

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AFP) Legendary ballet choreographer Maurice Bejart received a final curtain call four days after his death, as friends and family gathered for a farewell ceremony in Lausanne Monday.

The curtain rose and dropped twice on Bejart's coffin, bathed in a stark light and flanked by possessions loved by the artist, amid strains of classical and Indian music at the city's art-deco Metropole performance hall.

Born in France and famed worldwide for both his avant-garde style and his desire to reconnect ballet to the masses, Bejart died in a hospital in his adopted Lausanne Thursday at the age of 80.

On Sunday, hundreds of people waited patiently in line at the Metropole to pay their last respects to Bejart.

He is to be cremated Tuesday in Lausanne and the urn containing his ashes will be given to his family, according to a spokesman for his Bejart Ballet company.

Bejart had asked that his ashes be scattered on the beaches of Belgium's North Sea coastal town of Ostend

Bejart had been born in Marseille in France in 1927 but had lived in Lausanne in Switzerland since 1987 when he launched his Bejart Ballet Lausanne.

He had made the city of Lausanne his home and had been granted the honorific title 'honorary citizen' 10 years ago. He was formally accepted as a Swiss citizen earlier this year. He died Thursday.

He had been in and out of hospital for several weeks suffering from heart and kidney problems.

The Mayor of Lausanne, Daniel Brelaz had opened the ceremony saying: 'The Swiss lose a friend and an ambassador in the world.' Then the curtain rose to reveal the coffin.

Weyergans revealed that Bejart was working on his next project during his final days despite his illness, a ballet inspired by the German actress Marlene Dietrich. A film of her performing 'I get a kick out of you' was played to the gathering.

The ceremony was the final act for Bejart. His coffin had been on display since Sunday allowing several hundred members of the public to file past and write their messages in the books of condolence

LONDON: In the James Bond novels and films, it fell to the technical expert Q to invent the gizmos and cunningly concealed weapons that helped the British spy cheat death and save the world.

Inventions ranging from a biometric keyboard to blast-proof curtains were on display this month by five companies in the final round of the Global Security Challenge, a competition to identify the world s most promising security start-up.

'I m sorry that Q wasn t at the judging table,' said Richard Dearlove, who from 1999-2004 was C - the real-life code name given to the head of British spy service MI6.

On a more serious note, Dearlove told participants in the competition about the complex new threats the world faces.

'We must also contend with the possibility that many new technologies have a dark side and may be used against us,' he said.

The highlight of the night was Never Forget as the band interacted with a video projected onto curtains. Julian was very open to that, especially when we were recording the voice-over. But he would get to something in the script that didn't quite work and he'd say, 'Well, how would you say that?' And we would be able to contribute that way.
So much of Bauby's internal life is conveyed through your voiceover, which you recorded live in another room while watching your point-of-view on a monitor as it was being shot next door. Did you have any sort of ritual or preparatory technique to get you into the mood to record it?
The place I was in was like a studio, close to the set but in another room it was actually the ballroom of the hospital, because that was the biggest room. And there was a space for me there with a monitor, behind a curtain, where I would sit in my clothes and my make-up, of course without [the prosthetics]. But yes, I was in my bubble [Amalric leans down as if to cup his hands around a monitor], and trying to find that space and that voice. It wasn't very fair to the other actors, actually, who had to do all of their acting directly to the camera. And the way it was set up, the cameraman became kind of like an actor in the scene

It also allows them to choose whether to seek company in the building's communal lounge, or invite friends into their flat, or spend time on their own. t was the voice I recognised. 'I'm homeless. Can I sleep on your sofa just for a few nights?' M stood on the doorstep, a lumbering, bear-like figure, his newly shaved head pink and raw. He was clutching a pillow and wearing a green velvet curtain draped like a cloak over his shoulders. I didn't recognise the face, as I'd met him only once many years before, but I knew the voice from countless telephone calls.

A writers' event already has taken place there.
Future plans might include guitarists, comedy acts, a musical and an operatic performance. Fine arts classes also might be offered in the basement classrooms, she added.
The village purchased the building in 1999 and rented it to another church for a while before the idea of the civic center came about. City offices were moved into other areas of the former church and a community banquet room was opened as well.
During the Oct. 28 open house, Wolgamuth said many former church members were on hand to see the renovations.
'There was not one bad comment,' she said. 'Many people said they were married here.'
The large picture window at the front of the church remained, at the request of Village Mayor Bruce Rinker. It is covered with black curtains, but Wolgamuth said the former church members were thrilled to see it still there.
The current stage is small, but future plans include a temporary extension stage and a backstage elevator to move props and equipment down to the classroom area.
'It's a nice facility,' Wolgamuth said. 'Everyone is excited about it.'

The couple had hoped the site could be declared historic and the drive-in saved, but that didn't happen.

Hildebrandt and Lemon are among hundreds of people across Santa Cruz County and beyond who regularly flock to the drive-in to catch the latest box office hits. The comfort and privacy of one's own car, and ticket price of $6 a person, made the parking lot theater a popular destination.

I like being able to curl up wearing my pajamas, said Hildebrandt, a registered nurse at Dominican Hospital. I also like being able to control the volume.

The couple had a standing date at the drive-in as often as the movies changed. They've been to a movie theater only once since getting hooked on the Skyview a couple of years ago

By Mark Trevelyan, Security Correspondent

LONDON (Reuters) - 'Now pay attention, 007!'

In the James Bond novels and films, it fell to technical expert Q to invent the gizmos and cunningly concealed weapons that helped the British spy cheat death and save the world.

From a biometric keyboard to blast-proof curtains, the inventions on display in the real world this month came from five technology firms in the final round of the Global Security Challenge, a competition to identify the world's most promising security start-up.

'I'm sorry that Q wasn't at the judging table,' said Sir Richard Dearlove, who from 1999-2004 was the real-life C -- the code-name given to the head of British spy service MI6.

But on a more somber note, he told participants: 'We are faced with complex new threats to society ..

Industry players, private equity groups and venture capital firms all listened closely to the entrants' pitches, in an event highlighting the challenges facing young companies in turning bright ideas into commercial ventures.

Night camera

The winning entry was from NoblePeak Vision Corporation, based in Wakefield, Massachusetts and founded in 2002 as a spin-off from Bell Laboratories: its night-vision camera can pick up short-wave infrared (SWIR) light invisible to the eye.

The black-and-white night-time images are much sharper than those generated by thermal video cameras, and applications include battlefield vision, protecting buildings and helping car drivers avoid collisions at night.

Other finalists included biometric technology to recognise keyboard users by their typing behaviour - sparing users from memorising dozens of passwords - and a hand-held device for testing exposure to nerve agents.

By scanning the eye, it can also detect carbon monoxide or cyanide poisoning, or identify trauma to the brain.

Another company offered new high-strength fibres that get fatter when stretched and are highly resistant to blast damage, offering potential as special curtains to catch flying window glass in an explosion.

Also in contention was a 'face synthesis' device to create up to thousands of images from one photo, predicting how the subject will look in different lighting conditions, from different angles and with varying expressions or facial hair.

Kudos and cash

Phil Davies, marketing vice president for winning entrant NoblePeak Vision, said the company - funded by Matrix Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners - would use the kudos and cash to help it grow
